Lessons Learned on the Mountain

Skiing with our kids is something that we have made a priority in our family we try to go once a week. It is a something that is not always easy, skiing with a 5 year old and 2 year old is a lot of work and not always fun. I am usually a sweaty mess with a sore back and legs by the end! It is still so worth it to go and keep going, our children sincerely love to ski and watching them find that freedom of flying down the mountain is pure joy.

Although they love to ski this does not mean that every moment on the mountain is pure happiness. This picture will always make me laugh because moments before we were "that" family on the mountain you know the ones with crying kids and flustered parents. I don't know why but it suddenly became very funny to me and I wanted a picture of my crew. Im sure that Mark thought I was crazy but like the good sport that he is he smiled for my picture.

After this we skied to a little lodge with chairs and took our skies off, we were all still a little flustered  but then Dax found a whole pile of fresh snow and started playing in it. Then Rudy stopped whining and decided to join him. Mark and I followed them over and then before we knew it we were all laughing, eating snow and having a big snowball fight.

I learn some new trick that helps my kids learn and have fun every time we go. The lesson I learned on this day was that sometimes our activities need to be kid lead. We may want to keep skiing or hiking or whatever activity it is that we are doing, but as a parent if we get frustrated with our kids if they are not up to the full activity on that day then they will not have fun. The whole reason behind these activities is to teach our children to get off the couch and out into the world experiencing things, and having fun doing it. So don't put to much expectations on things, if you have to make a stop every time your two year old sees some "good" snow and let them eat a bunch then that is a win. If you hit the bunny hill a few times then make snow angels the rest of the time then that is a win. Eventually they will grow up a little bit and only cry when it is time to leave like Dax does.

This day turned out to be one of our favorite days on the mountain. After our snowball fight break Rudy skied better then he ever has and Dax absolutely killed it and did his first Box all on his own. So the moral of the story is to keep going on adventures with your kids even if you have hard moments, don't get flustered keep going and I promise you will create some of your most cherished memories.
